Michael King Declines Option, Enters Free Agency After Strong 2026 Season
Right-handed starter Michael King has declined his player option with the San Diego Padres, making him a free agent entering the 2027 offseason. King’s decision leaves significant rotation questions for the Padres as they face a potential rebuild of their starting staff.

Michael King has officially declined the player option on his contract with the San Diego Padres, confirming his free agency status as of late October 2026. This move, reported by MLB.com, makes King one of the premier pitchers available on the market heading into his age-32 season. His decision was finalized shortly after the conclusion of the 2026 regular season and postseason.
King’s 2026 campaign was arguably the best of his career. Over 32 starts, he maintained a 3.21 ERA while delivering consistent innings, culminating in a career-high 4.3 WAR according to Baseball-Reference metrics. His contributions extended into the postseason, where he pitched effectively both as a starter and reliever during the Padres’ National League Division Series run, including a save in Game 3 against the Brewers.
Originally acquired as a key piece in the trade that sent Juan Soto to the Yankees before the 2024 season, King has developed into a reliable arm for San Diego. His career ERA stands at 3.23, with an even stronger mark of 3.15 recorded during his 78 appearances (77 starts) with the Padres. His durability and performance have been valuable assets in the rotation over the past three seasons.
King’s contract included opt-out clauses after the first two seasons, and his recent decision activates a $5 million buyout for the Padres. The team’s rotation outlook for 2027 is now uncertain. Randy Vásquez is the only confirmed returning starter, while Nick Pivetta’s club option remains undecided. Other notable pitchers like Walker Buehler, Robbie Ray, Casey Mize, and Lucas Giolito are also free agents, and Yu Darvish’s future is still unclear. Joe Musgrove’s role with the team has yet to be determined, adding to the Padres' offseason challenges.
King’s departure opens a significant gap in the Padres’ pitching staff, forcing the franchise to explore free agency or internal options to rebuild a competitive rotation. The team’s ability to retain or replace these key arms will be critical to their 2027 competitiveness in the National League West.
