Belichick Returns to Hall of Fame Coach Category as Five-Man Field Opens for 2027
Bill Belichick is back in the Pro Football Hall of Fame process after the Hall announced him as one of five coach-category candidates for the Class of 2027. The subcommittee chose Belichick, Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan from an original field of 14 nominees, with one coach to advance to the final selection stage in early 2027.
Bill Belichick is back in the Pro Football Hall of Fame coach pipeline, and this time he is one of five names competing for one spot in the next round.
The Hall announced Thursday that Belichick, Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan were chosen by its coaching subcommittee as the Coach-category candidates for possible election into the Class of 2027. The group was trimmed from an original field of 14 nominees, and the subcommittee will now select one candidate to go before the full selection committee when the Hall builds its next class of enshrinees in early 2027.
That structure matters more than the headline number. The five coaches are not finalists for election yet, and their presence on the list does not guarantee a vote in Canton. It means they remain in the process after another cut, with only one coach eventually reaching the final group alongside the contributor and modern-era player candidates.
For Belichick, the announcement puts him back in the conversation after he reached this stage last year but was not elected in his first year of eligibility. He remains one of the most decorated coaches in NFL history, with six Super Bowl wins as head coach of the New England Patriots and two more as a defensive assistant with the New York Giants. His first year on the ballot did not produce an immediate enshrinement, but Thursday’s list shows the Hall has kept him in the coach-category mix.
Belichick’s résumé is hard to separate from the case for immediate consideration. He and Tom Brady won six Super Bowls together in New England, a run that defined the Patriots’ modern dynasty. Before that, Belichick won two titles working under the Giants. His record also includes the 2007 Spygate scandal, when the Patriots were fined after being caught filming defensive signals from the New York Jets during a game. The Hall’s announcement does not resolve how voters balance that history against the championships, but it does confirm that Belichick remains among the candidates under review.
The other four coaches bring their own championship credentials and long résumés. Coughlin won two Super Bowls with the Giants, beating Belichick and the Patriots both times, and also won a title as an assistant with the Giants. Holmgren led the Green Bay Packers to one Super Bowl title and won two more as an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers. Reeves went 201-174-2 over 23 seasons with the Broncos, Giants and Falcons, reached the Super Bowl four times as a head coach and won a title as an assistant with the Cowboys. Shanahan won back-to-back Super Bowls with Denver, added another title as a 49ers assistant and compiled a 178-144 mark in 20 seasons with the Broncos and Washington.
The Hall’s timing gives the process a long runway. The Class of 2027 will be announced at NFL Honors in Los Angeles in February and enshrined the following August in Canton. Before that, the coach category will be reduced to one name by the subcommittee, then folded into the larger selection process that also includes contributors and modern-era players.
Belichick’s next step, then, is not election but survival in a crowded field. The Hall has already narrowed the coach list once, and his return makes clear that the first-year miss did not end his candidacy. It simply reset it for another round of voting.
