TreVeyon Henderson says hospital stay followed unexplained neurological symptoms, no return date set
The Patriots running back said Friday that a medical emergency sent him to the hospital for several days, with tests coming back reassuring but the cause still unknown. Mike Vrabel said New England will support Henderson and offered no timetable for his return.
TreVeyon Henderson’s absence is no longer being treated like a routine illness. The Patriots running back said Friday that an unusual medical emergency sent him to the hospital for several days after a series of unexplained neurological symptoms, and coach Mike Vrabel did not set a timetable for when he might play again.
Henderson’s statement filled in the biggest gap around a situation that had only been described publicly as an illness. He said he underwent extensive medical testing and evaluation during the hospital stay, and that the results were positive and reassuring. Even so, he added that the cause of the symptoms remains “unknown and unexplainable,” which leaves the team with a medical issue that is still unresolved.
That matters because it changes the frame around his recent absence. Henderson missed New England’s Week 8 win over Miami, and he had not practiced since Oct. 28 after being added to the injury report the following day. Until Friday, the Patriots had listed the problem as an illness. Henderson’s own description makes clear the issue was more serious than a standard short-term football absence, and it leaves his near-term availability uncertain.
Henderson said the symptoms have affected his strength, coordination and some of his physical functions. He also said he is working with specialists and physical therapists and is focused on recovery and long-term well-being. That wording gives the clearest sense yet of how the medical emergency has affected him day to day, while also showing why the team has been careful not to push for a football-first timeline.
Vrabel reinforced that approach. The coach said the team will support Henderson and do what it can to help him get healthy, but he stopped short of offering a return date. He also said the Patriots will see whether Henderson goes on the non-football injury list, another sign that the club is still sorting out how to manage the situation rather than planning for a quick return.
The Patriots’ backfield will have to keep moving without him for now. In six games, Henderson has totaled 248 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown on 57 touches. He has 203 rushing yards and 45 receiving yards this season, giving New England a useful complement behind Rhamondre Stevenson before the latest setback.
Without Henderson against Miami, the Patriots leaned on Stevenson, Corey Kiner and practice-squad call-up Lan Larison. That usage does not replace Henderson’s role exactly, but it does show how New England redistributed snaps in his absence. Vrabel said the team does not plan to add another running back to the roster at this point, which suggests the current depth chart will have to hold until Henderson’s condition becomes clearer.
The broader football consequence is straightforward: New England has to prepare for Sunday’s game against Green Bay with Henderson unavailable and no confirmed recovery window. The team’s immediate decision is not about game-planning around a coming return, but about adjusting to a health issue that has already cost him practice time and a game. For now, the only verified next step is continued evaluation and recovery, with the Patriots waiting for Henderson and his doctors to determine what comes next.
