Houston Astros 2, Cleveland Guardians 0 — April 22, 2026 | Progressive Field
The Guardians had chances on Wednesday afternoon, but one early swing and a quiet day at the plate were enough to send Cleveland to a 2-0 loss against Houston in the rubber game of the series at Progressive Field.
🔑 Key Performers
- Tanner Bibee — 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. Not a bad outing at all, but Yordan Alvarez’s first-inning blast was the difference.
- Chase DeLauter — 2-for-4. Cleveland’s rookie outfielder kept putting together quality at-bats and accounted for two of the club’s five hits.
- George Valera — Reached and gave Cleveland one of its better scoring chances, but the Guardians couldn’t cash it in.
- Yordan Alvarez — 3-for-4, 2-run HR. His MLB-leading 11th homer came in the first inning and held up all afternoon.
- Peter Lambert — 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K. Houston’s starter kept Cleveland off balance and worked out of every jam.
📝 Game Summary
There was no mystery to this one. Houston grabbed control immediately when Carlos Correa doubled to open the game and Alvarez followed with a two-run shot to right-center. That was all the scoring the Astros needed.
From there, Bibee settled in and gave the Guardians a real shot to climb back into it. He finished six innings and kept the deficit at two, while Cleveland’s bullpen trio of Matt Festa, Hunter Gaddis and Erik Sabrowski combined for three scoreless frames to keep things tight.
But the offense never found the big hit. Cleveland stranded runners in key spots in the first and third innings, wasted a leadoff walk in the second, and left George Valera standing at third after an error helped create a fourth-inning opening. Lambert consistently made the pitch he needed, and Houston’s bullpen slammed the door from there.
Steven Okert and Enyel De Los Santos handled the late innings for the Astros, and De Los Santos worked around late traffic to finish off the shutout. Brayan Rocchio’s flyout with two men on ended it, and the Guardians had to wear a frustrating one after looking like they might take the series a night earlier.
📊 Notable Stats
- Cleveland was shut out on just five hits.
- DeLauter had two of the Guardians’ five hits.
- Alvarez drove in both Houston runs with his first-inning homer.
- Bibee has now thrown better than the final line might suggest more than once this year, but the win column still hasn’t caught up.
- The Astros took two of three in the series.
